About St. Mary's County Farm Bureau
St. Mary's County has a rich and diverse agricultural industry that blends traditional farming with modern production. The county is home to 656 farms encompassing more than 64,000 acres of farmland. Grain production is the county's leading agricultural commodity, with thousands of acres dedicated to corn, soybeans, and wheat. While tobacco is no longer as prominent as it once was, several farms continue to grow this historic crop, preserving an important part of the county's agricultural heritage. In addition to row crops, St. Mary's County supports a thriving network of fruit and vegetable farms that provide fresh, locally grown products to residents and visitors. Livestock production is also an important part of the local economy, with producers raising beef cattle, pork, chickens, and sheep. Complementing its land-based agriculture, the county's location along the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries supports a significant aquaculture industry, making seafood production another vital component of St. Mary's County agriculture. Together, these diverse commodities strengthen the local economy while continuing the county's long tradition of agricultural stewardship.
